To celebrate International Women’s Day, we’ve put together a list of 14 of the best outdoor-loving females to follow in 2018.
We’ve deliberately made our selection fairly broad, including firmly established adventure-seeking instagrammers as well the more up-and-coming, from all across the globe.
See how each documents their life out in the open, featuring travels through breathtaking landscapes and even the occasional launch off rocks and ramps. We hope that digging through these feeds will inspire you to get outside too, and enjoy all that nature has to offer - whatever the weather!
Three in one to start off, but it wouldn’t be right to include one of this trio and not the rest, as they're currently attempting to be the first team (man or woman) to navigate along the Essequibo river by kayak. Remarkably, large stretches of the South American river are still classed as uncharted territory. Good luck to you all! Check their profiles for the latest updates.
Elise gives us a great mix of nature’s repeating patterns and once-in-a-lifetime spectacles, as well as offering an insight into the different kind of outdoor kit she wears during each adventure. Hot and cold climes, starry nights or glowing days, Elise captures them all brilliantly.
Erin clearly loves to get away from it all, but often encounters wildlife along the way, and shares these moments through some stunning photography. She often comments with very heartfelt honesty about what she’s thinking or feeling as she travels, so there’s plenty to appreciate here.
Sian smiles a lot. It really comes through that she savours every minute of being active outdoors. Capturing photos of rural adventures in the UK and beyond, be sure not to miss Sian’s feed or her award-winning adventure blog. There’s a book coming soon too. Where does she find the time?
No meaningful list of outdoor women would be complete without the inclusion of this particular adrenline junkie. Rachel Atherton is the only mountain biker to complete a perfect season ever, winning every World Cup Downhill race and the World Championships in 2016. The reigning queen of the sport, take a look at her account to see just how far and often she pushes the laws gravity.
Justine is a real-life action woman - adventuring, blogging and speaking as well as what must be a full-on role as an NHS physiotherapist. Her travels have real meaning to them, often intelligently documenting a layer of history on the geography she journeys through. Justine is definitely someone to keep track of.
‘Based in the Faroe Islands’, Rannvá proudly states in her profile biog, and she really captures the remote beauty of the archipelago she calls home. There’s a mystical tranquility to each post, that’ll leave you clicking for another dose of raw stillness.
Originally from Prague, Teru’s gorgeous feed is punctuated by towns and cityscapes that almost act as resting stops between her shots of the wilderness. It’s not just the filters Teru uses that have a gentle quality - the subjects are often full of light and warmth too, sometimes showing her making and creating at home. Why not click over to her guide to travelling solo while you’re there.
Simona’s Icelandic photography is some of the most dramatic on offer here, with lots of awe-inspiring aerial shots of incredible and sometimes foreboding natural scenes. Simona contrasts ridges and contours with colourful rivers and pathways, really drawing you in to each picture. Each one could be straight from a film, leaving you scrolling for more.
There’s a really artistic quality to this feed - Christian’s posts are so sharp and fresh. She's very accomplished at grouping together the different colours of each season, almost like natural chapters. And Christian is even more skilled at composing each shot into a window through to another land.
Whether free-diving under oceans or resting in a hammock looking out over them, there’s a free and playful quality to this native Hawaiin’s feed, but remaining strong enough to hold the moon in her hands (see if you can find it).
It’s clear from Jule’s feed that she’s a life-loving individual, with the passion behind the different causes she’s involved in shining through as well. A lover of all things cycling, expect to to pick up on the latest two-wheeled trends via this stylish East London lady, and be sure to check her blog.
